Program Summary:

Fast Start Academy is a unique six-week program which has received praise from past participants.  The program is designed to transition you from high school to college. The program provides two classes (six hours of elective credit), labs, housing, a meal plan, books, service learning, and a strong sense of community.  As a participant you'll have great teachers, meet other entering freshmen, benefit from peer mentors, and get a head-start with your courses.

How do I apply for Fast Start Academy?

To apply for a seat in the program please complete the application using the link provided below. NOTE: You must be admitted through the Admissions Office and be issued a JSU student identification number before completing the Fast Start application.

What should I expect during the program?

Fast Start Academy compresses a 13 week semester into 26 class days. You should expect to attend and actively participate in all classes, and to complete your assignments in a timely manner.

Can I attend Accepted Student Day?

Fast Start Academy’s Accepted Student Day is April 5th, 2019. Once you complete an application and pay your $100 deposit you will receive an invitation from Admissions and Learning Services.

How many students will be admitted to Fast Start Academy?

We accept 75 students each summer into the program.

When and what time are the courses offered?

Participants will attend JSU’s Summer II 2019 term Dates: June 20th thru July 29th. A Fast Start Kick Off will occur prior to the start of the program.  Classes are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (includes breaks and lunch).

Can I take a vacation during the program?

Please schedule your vacation prior to the start or after the program concludes. Absences are only allowed in emergency situations.

What classes will I take in Fast Start Academy?

  • MS107 Intermediate Algebra for Finite Mathematics: A developmental mathematics course designed to provide mastery of the topics required for successful completion of MS110 and/or MS204 and preparation for MS 112 (3 credit hours).
  • LS 104 ACADEMIC SUCCESS SKILLS: Individualized freshman seminar providing supportive guidance in study skills, problem-solving, decision-making, and college adjustment.  This course is designed to help students with balancing college life and proficiency in the classroom.  It covers many subjects such as using blackboard efficiently, English skills, financial management, etc. (3 credit hours)
  • LS 101 FAST START LAB:  This lab is mandatory for students who have been accepted to JSU through the Fast Start Academy. The learning environment in the laboratory will be individualized and mastery-based for additional instruction in the areas of algebra, writing, reading, and first-year success. The objectives of this lab are tied to the two courses offered in the Fast Start Academy: MS 107 Intermediate Algebra for Finite Mathematics and LS 104 Academic Success Skills.

Where will I live during the program?

You will live in a JSU campus residence hall near the center of campus and enjoy programs and activities to help you make a successful transition to JSU.

How much will it cost for me to attend Fast Start Academy and what is included?

(This cost comparison is based on the 2018 Fast Start Academy program. Prices are subject to change)

  • Tuition: (6 credit hours for the price of 3 credit hours)   $927
  • Fast Start Academy Lab Fee: $100
  • On Campus Housing: (Mandatory) $600
  • Meal Plans: 8 meals per week with $150.00 flex -  $541.50
  • Books: (approx.) $150
  • Gamecock Orientation Fee $80
  • ID Fee: $10
  • Parking Decal Fee: $15

Available Financial Aid:

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 2018/2019 if you qualify. If you have applied, make sure to check under MY JSU, Student and Financial Aid link to see if you were awarded funds. Also check your JSU email daily for information from FAFSA. If you have not yet applied please do so immediately at: https://fafsa.ed.gov/  

Can I work during the program?

Since Fast Start Academy is an academic immersion program, students are strongly discouraged from working during the program.

Will I attend Gamecock Orientation?

Yes, you will attend orientation for the Fall semester as a group during the program. You will register for a specific session during Fast Start Academy’s Accepted Student Day.

What about fall semester?

If you successfully complete Fast Start Academy, you will return for the 2019 Fall Semester at JSU. Please complete the 2019/2020 FASFA form for the 2019 academic year.

  • Once your application to Jacksonville State University has been processed and your test scores have been evaluated, you will be able to apply to the Fast Start Academy
  • Do not complete the Fast Start Academy application below until your application to Jacksonville State University has been processed.
  • The $100 non-refundable deposit is due at application completion
