Who May Attend:    Any public school teacher, administrator, or school board member from the fifteen school systems served by Jacksonville State University, may attend any session.  All training is free of charge.  Participants may be asked to provide the cost of lodging in some sessions if applicable.

If you would like to receive Continuing Education Credit for your participation you must register on STIPD.

If you register for a session on STIPD and are unable to attend, please go online and cancel your registration. Sessions that accommodate a limited number of participants will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  You will be notified by email if a session for which you have registered is filled.

Cancellation of Sessions: If there is not a sufficient number of registrations five working days prior to a workshop, it will be canceled.  Registrants will be notified by email or phone.

Description:  Presenters will demonstrate navigational shortcuts and other iPad “tricks” for enhanced usability, share useful apps for classroom instruction, explain helpful hints for technology integration in the 21st Century Classroom (including apps for collaboration, etc.), and offer resources through which teachers can acquire additional free materials.  For maximum impact, please bring your own fully charged iPad.  No Android device procedures will be discussed.

Description:  This 3-day program is designed to help you achieve personal and interpersonal effectiveness from the inside out by building new, lasting habits.  This training is designed by FranklinCovey and is based on the book by Stephen R. Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.  The first three habits address what individuals do to develop self-mastery and self-discipline.  The second three habits help us build deep, lasting, highly effective relationships with other people.  The seventh habit teaches us how to self-renew so that we can work continuously on the habits throughout our entire lives. This training will help you envision the life you want to live, either personally and/or professionally, and then teach you the process, principles, and core concepts for achieving it.

Description: The relationships and purpose of mentor/mentee will be discussed, followed by the identification process of high priority students in need of a mentor.  Participants will review how to establish a convenient meeting schedule during the school day and how to gather data to access the effectiveness of the program.

Description:  In an effort to generate annual yearly progress or improve test scores, educators spend a great deal of time examining and implementing programs that will hopefully change their schools.  Although personnel, curriculum and instructional strategies are important, nothing will consistently improve test score data without addressing motivation.  Learn how to motivate all students-especially those students who are hard to motivate.

Description:  Instructional rounds can be a fantastic way to improve teacher instruction and ultimately, test scores.  If conducted properly, teachers are provided with a wonderful opportunity to learn from each other and develop a greater sense of community.  We will explore the true purpose of instructional rounds, discuss do’s and don’ts, establish parameters for the debriefing, and determine how to develop a plan of action.

Description: Whether you’re talking about education or athletics, the best way to ensure success is to make every student (every player) better.  If we know and understand the importance of this concept, why do schools continue to ignore it each year?  Why do we continue to “herd” our students through the year?  Why are so many of our students forced to take remediation classes before entering college?  We will explore those barriers that prevent progress and discuss ways to overcome them.

Description:  This will most likely be remembered as the most difficult year in math instruction, bar none:  a new course of study, new curriculums, and an assessment based on the OLD course of study.  Where can teachers turn for assistance?  Be embraced by the efforts of math teachers across the US and utilize the web!  One of the greatest strengths of the Common Core is its innate design to share resources with other teachers in our field using the content standard identifiers.  AMSTI Math Specialists will provide teachers with the ability to navigate through web resources that include white board lessons, interactive games, assessment tools, and student examples/outcomes for all common core standards.

Description:  This session, presented by an Alabama Department of Public Safety Special Agent will include discussion of the trends in Social Media sites, self produced child pornography, and other issues that are facing schools, teachers, students, and parents as computer and cellphone use is so prevalent in our society.  What are the legal issues that must be addressed by teachers, schools, and school systems?  What is cyberbullying and how can issues with cyberbullying be resolved?  Participants in this session will have opportunity to address questions and receive answers from the Officer who is presenting.
 

Title:  The National World War II Museum Tour

Description: Teachers of all disciplines will want to experience this award-winning museum.  The World War II Museum in New Orleans provides a moving and powerful message of patriotism and an appreciation for our veterans in both the European and Pacific Theatres during World War II.  Lodging and transportation will be provided for public school teachers in the JSU region.  The group will depart on July 29, 2013 and return the afternoon of July 31,2013.  Lodging in New Orleans on the evenings of July 29-30, 2013, will be provided for registered participants.  Transportation and registration cost are also provided, however, participants will be responsible for all meals.  Pre-registration is mandatory, rooms are based upon double occupancy and space is limited. Detail information will be forwarded to pre-registered participants.

Description:  Many schools systems across the nation, and in the Jacksonville State University region are moving toward a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) technology  integration plan.  This session is designed for the teacher faced with making this work in the classroom setting.  We will discuss the rationale and issues surrounding BYOD, but focus primarily on web applications for instruction, communication, and management that work well across multiple devices.  Please bring a fully charged device for use in this session.
 
  
Title:  The Jacksonville State University Writing Project Annual Conference

Title:  Study Tour of Washington DC Area
The Jacksonville State University In-Service Center is offering a professional study tour in the Washington DC area, July 18-22, 2013.  Travel is by tour bus and lodging is at the JW Marriott in downtown Washington DC.  Cost to teachers in the JSU In-Service region is $550.00, payable by July 12, 2013.  The cost will include travel, double lodging and three breakfast coupons plus all tour cost. Included in the tour are the monuments, some of the Smithsonian Museum and hopefully the White House and Capitol, based upon approval.  Registration will be confirmed upon receipt of a deposit of $100.00.  Deposit will be refunded if cancellation is made by July 12, 2013.  Additional information will be sent to participants upon confirmation of registration.

Title:  Teaching to Gender Differences to Boost Literacy in Social Studies

Description: In today's world students must be able to decode difficult vocabulary, to question and examine sources, and to deconstruct and analyze a variety of texts.  These are skills especially difficult for poor readers-the bulk of which are boys.  Recent scientific research is illuminating the differences in cognitive development between the male and female brain.  This humorous and informative workshop presents the differences in male and female brain development that affect behavior and learning.  Teachers will come to understand that most school practices reinforce how girls learn rather than boys; consequently, boys make up the majority of our behavior problems, failures, and drop outs.  Practical Social Studies literacy strategies will be presented that promote instruction for both sexes.  Detailed handouts will be provided.
