Scholarship Descriptions

Copeland (Rex) Memorial

Awarded to a full-time junior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 demonstrating academic achievement while attending JSU.

Established by Emilea Smith Copeland of Vestavia, Alabama in memory of Rex Copeland. Rex tragically lost his life will attending Stamford University (1988-1989). A graduate of Huffman High school, Rex's legacy was his joy of life. Few will have known Rex in a few years except through this Memorial Award. To those lucky enough to remember him, his love of life should be what we think of when his name is mentioned. Those who never knew him, Should know that his happiness came not from single-minded pursuits, but from a balance of hard work and play. Life is too short to forget those people and events that truly make a difference.


Jones (Randy & Debra)

Full-time undergraduate student who is an entering transfer student from Gadsden State Community College, Snead State Community College or Northeast Alabama Community College.  Only students who demonstrate academic aptitude shall be eligible for this award.

The Randy and Debra Jones Annual Scholarship Fund (the “Fund) was established to promote the education of deserving full-time, undergraduate transfer students enrolled at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama. 


Duncan (Dr. John D.)

Full-time undergraduate students demonstrating academic achievement from Etowah County.

Established by Dr. John E. Duncan of Gadsden, Alabama, for the benefit of a deserving full-time undergraduate student from Etowah County.


JSU Ambassador Administrator

Jacksonville State University Ambassador.  

Students who are selected as Ambassadors serve as an official JSU representative at JSU hosted events, such as graduation, JSU Presidential functions and board meetings, career fairs, Preview Days and they assist in on-campus recruiting events.

Ambassadors also accompany the JSU Admissions Counselors to area high schools for recruitment. And so much more!!!

Applicants must Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50; have completed a minimum of 30 hours at JSU; and be enrolled as a full-time student at the time of application. Applicants will also be required to attend group and individual interviews

Specific application dates will be announced during the Spring Semester. Watch for messages on the jumbo trons outside of TMB and the Coliseum, and through other campus social media.

Howell (Ken and Jenny)

Full-time undergraduate student from Calhoun County High School enrolled in the College of Business as an accounting major and a cadet in the JSU ROTC program. If no student from Calhoun County High School meets that requirement, the scholarship can be offered to an accounting major from a Calhoun County High School.  Only students who demonstrate academic aptitude shall be eligible for this award.

Established by Ken and Jenny Howell for a full time undergraduate student that graduated from any Calhoun County high school with 'B' average, enrolled in the College of Commerce and Business Administration as an accounting major, and a Cadet in the JSU ROTC program.


Yates (Melvin)

Full-time undergraduate students demonstrating academic achievement

Established by Mr. Yates' wife, Mrs. Elizabeth "Beth"Yates' estate. This general scholarship is for  deserving full-time student.


Kennamer (Bob & Lou) (Applicant must be a Graduate of Cleburne Cty, Ranburne, Scottsboro or KD Smith HS)

Established by Bob and Lou Kennamer of Anniston, Alabama for deserving students from Cleburne County High School, Ranburne High School, Scottsboro High School, or Kate Duncan Smith DAR (Daughters of the American Revoltion) School (Grant, AL). Students must be in the top 50% of their high school class to be considered; minimum GPA of 3.0. Need considered, FAFSA must be on file at JSU. Mr. Kennamer is a trustee emeritus of Jacksonville State University.


Wilson (Barbara T. & Jimmy D.)

Full-time undergraduate demonstrating academic achievement; GPA 2.5; U.S. Citizen; AL Resident; 30 JSU hours at JSU

Established by Ms. Barbara T. Wilson on her retirement from Jacksonville State University. The Scholarship will benefit a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Elementary Education or Secondary Health & Physical Education program. Only students who have a 2.5/4.0 grade point average, graduated from an Alabama high school, have been an Alabama resident for a minimum of seven years prior to applying, have completed at least 30 hours of their education at Jacksonville State University, and have U. S. citizenship will be eligible for this award.

Phi Theta Kappa (JSU Presidential Transfer Scholarship)

Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest honor society for community college students, and the only one founded by college presidents. In 1918, at a meeting at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, eight community-college presidents created this academic honors organization, using the historic senior honor society Phi Beta Kappa as their model, to recognize their outstanding students. The Society grew, expanding into other states, and into coeducational and public institutions.

Must be unconditionally admitted to JSU prior to March 1, 2014. Must be in the 2014 Spring or Summer graduating class; have a minimum 3.5 GPA from transferring Alabama Community College; and never attended JSU as a full-time student. The scholarship will pay 12 in-state traditional classroom tuition hours for the Fall and for the Spring Semesters only. The scholarship will not pay for the Distance Learning Tuition difference per hour.  The scholarship is renewable for 1 additional year, total of 48 semester hours. The scholarship is limited to the first two years at JSU.

In order to receive any scholarship you must be unconditionally accepted, and have submitted an application, official test scores, and any supporting documentation as required by the specific scholarship. Validation of the scholarship will be made after confirmation of graduation

Established in memory of Nile Borden Finley, a Calhoun County, Alabama elementary school teacher, for the benefit of a junior or senior majoring in elementary education.


Finley (Dr. Wayne & Dr. Sara)

Full-time junior or senior demonstrating academic achievement; 3.0 GPA; Resident of Clay, Coosa, or Randolph Counties

Established by Drs. Wayne and Sara Finley of Birmingham, Alabama, and founders of UAB's Laboratory of Medical Genetics, to benefit undergraduate students from the Alabama counties of Clay, Coosa, or Randolph. Preference will be given to students majoring in mathematics or science, either pre-professional or secondary education. Only juniors or seniors with at least a "B" average will be eligible for the scholarship.


Dempsey (Charon) Memorial

Full-time junior or senior demonstrating academic achievement; minimum of 30 hours at JSU

Established in memory of Mrs. Sharon Dempsey who, at the time of her death, taught in the Department of Mathematics. Recipients of this scholarship will be restricted to mathematics or mathematics education majors who have attained at least Junior status. Applicants must have completed at least thirty (30) hours of their education at Jacksonville State University.


Curley (Andrew) Memorial

Full-time junior or senior demonstrating academic achievement; based on academics and character

Established in memory of Mr. Andrew Curley to provide support for an upper-class student in education.


Cottingham (Harry & Jean)

Full-time undergraduate: Must have 32 or more hours completed at JSU and be in good standing; Majoring in math or science.

Recipient shall be an undergraduate student with 32 or more hours completed and be in good standing, preferably accepted to the College of Educaton and majoring in math or science.


Calhoun (Charles & Doris)

Full-time junior or senior demonstrating academic achievement; JSU GPA 3.0

Established by the family of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Calhoun for the benefit of a deserving full-time junior or senior student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and admitted to the College of Education and Professional Studies.


Buttram (Judge H. Dean)

Full-time junior or senior with 3.25 overall GPA & a 3.50 GPA in declared major (political science, history, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, business, and English) ; demonstrated financial need; a letter from academic advisor indicating student’s progress or goals in working toward applying to law school. 

The scholarship recipient must arrange for their LSAT (Law School Admission Test) scores to be sent to the pre-law advisor.  Scores should be sent by the Law School Admission Council.

After applying for admission to a law school(s), the scholarship recipient must submit a copy of his/her application(s) to preferably an ABA Accredited Law School to the pre-law advisor.

Bush (Newbern) Memorial

Full-time junior demonstrating academic achievement; Native born Alabamians

Established in memory of Newbern Bush, a retired faculty member who taught mathematics. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time, native-born Alabama student who has attained junior status and is majoring in mathematics.


Arrington (Athena) Memorial

Full-time senior; High moral character and academic achievement

Established in memory of Ms. Athena Arrington, a 1954 graduate of JSU, for the benefit of a deserving senior majoring in elementary education.


Presidential Transfer

Established in memory of Minta Amerson for a deserving full-time graduate student who graduated from Berry High School in Berry, Alabama, and is enrolled in the College of Education and Professional Studies.


Peoples (Toby M.) Annual Scholarship (Applicant must be a graduate of a Blount County High School)

First-time freshman enrolled as a full-time student and unconditionally accepted in Jacksonville State University. Only one first-time freshman per year from each of the eight High Schools in Blount County shall be eligible for this award. Those High Schools are as follows: (1). Oneonta High School, (2). Appalachian High School,    (3). J.B. Pennington High School, (4). Cleveland High School, (5). Hayden High School, (6). Locust Fork High School, (7). Susan Moore High School, and (8). Southeastern School. Applicant must have attained a “B” or higher average score on grades 9 through 11. High School Guidance Counselor recommendation.

            Only students who demonstrate academic aptitude shall be eligible for this award.

Regions Bank Scholarship (AL high school graduate)
Full-time undergraduate Incoming freshman; Graduating from a high school in the state of Alabama High School; pre-ference will be given to applicants who demonstrate both academic merit and financial need; Current FAFSA must be on file at JSU

Blount County Endowed Scholarship (Applicant must be a graduate of a Blount County High School)

First-time freshman enrolled as a full-time student and unconditionally accepted in Jacksonville State University. Only one first-time freshman per year from each of the eight High Schools in Blount County shall be eligible for this award. Those High Schools are as follows: (1). Oneonta High School, (2). Womack (Jack & Kathy) (Applicant must be a Graduate of Oneonta HS)

Full-time undergraduate demonstrating academic achievement; graduate of Oneonta HS; 3.0 HS GPA; Need Based, FAFSA must be on file at JSU

Wilson Achievement (P.O. & Margaret)

Full-time incoming freshman; Natural born US Citizen; 3.0 HS GPA; Academic and extra-curricular activities considered; Candidates will be contacted and required to submit a separate essay, resume, letter of recommendation and an official high school transcript.

Established by P. O. and Margaret Wilson to promote the education of academically-superior, full-time entering freshmen. The scholarship is awarded for a four-year period - from college entrance to graduation - covering full tuition, housing, related books, and required fees. To be awarded Fall and Spring only.

Full-time incoming freshman; graduate of Jacksonville High School; engaged in community and school activities; Letter of recommendation from 12th grade faculty and guidance counselor; contact JSU scholarships@jsu.edu for additional criteria.

Established by Ms. Pearl Williams for an incoming full-time freshman who is a graduate of Jacksonville High School and engaged in community and school activities.


Valedictorian

Scholarship is offered to full-time incoming freshmen who are ranked 1st in their graduating class and declared Valedictorian their senior year of high school. The scholarship award will be limited to one scholarship per eligible high school. The Valedictorian scholarship application cannot be submitted online. The Application must be verified by the applicant's school guidance counselor or principal.

Students are consider in-state if they meet the following criteria: Alabama resident or a resident of one of the following Georgia counties: Bartow, Carroll, Chattooga, Coweta, Douglas, Floyd, Haralson, Heard, Paulding, Polk (Documentation may be required), 2014 Alabama high school graduate or 2014 Georgia high school graduate from one of the previously listed counties, entering freshman, unconditionally accepted and U.S. citizen. Official test scores must be on file at JSU prior to the March 1 scholarship deadline.

The deadline for applying for the Valedictorian Scholarship is June 1. Renewable one year, up to 64 hours.

Leadership (ACT 20 or above or SAT 950 or above)

Academic 2.5 GPA; ACT 20 or above or SAT 950 or above. It is the student's responsibility to notify the JSU Scholarship Office (Scholarships@jsu.edu) in the event you retake the ACT or SAT and score higher. If you qualify for a higher academic scholarship you will have to forfeit the lower of the two. The award will be limited to no more than one scholarship per eligible high school.

Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation

The primary goal of the ASCPA Educational Foundation is to attract the best and brightest individuals into the profession of accounting.  Founded in 1967, ASCPA members have supported the Foundation’s endowment through financial contributions,  which have allowed the Society to award annual scholarships to accounting students attending accredited colleges and universities throughout Alabama. Out-of-state Students: Non-Alabama resident (excluding the following Georgia counties: Bartow, Carroll, Chattooga, Coweta, Douglas, Floyd, Haralson, Heard, Paulding, Polk), 2014 high school graduate (non-Alabama high school or one of the previously listed Georgia counties), entering freshman, unconditionally accepted and U.S. citizen. Official test scores must be on file at JSU prior to the March 1 scholarship deadline.


Leadership (ACT 20 or above or SAT 950 or above)

If you qualify for this scholarship, you will be eligible for the in-state tuition rate.  Over the course of four years, this has the potential to save you more than $27,168!

Academic 2.5 GPA; ACT 20 or above or SAT 950 or above. It is the student's responsibility to notify the JSU Scholarship Office (Scholarships@jsu.edu) in the event you retake the ACT or SAT and score higher. If you qualify for a higher academic scholarship you will have to forfeit the lower of the two. The award will be limited to no more than one scholarship per eligible high school.

Based primarily on offices held in extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and community involvement. Renewable one year, up to 64 hours, based on continued leadership role. The Leadership scholarship application cannot be submitted online. The application must be verified and signed by the applicant's school guidance counselor or principal. A high school transcript, resume, photograph, 500-word essay, and letter of recommendation must be submitted with the Leadership scholarship application.

-        Who is the most influential person in your life and what leadership skills have you learned from that individual?

-        What major event in your life molded your leadership skills and created the leader you are today?

If you qualify for this scholarship, you will be eligible for the in-state tuition rate.  Over the course of four years, this has the potential to save you more than $27,168!

ACT 30 or above; or SAT 1340 or above; renewable 4 years, up to 128 hours. It is the student's responsibility to notify the JSU Scholarship Office (Scholarships@jsu.edu) in the event you retake the ACT or SAT and score higher. If you qualify for a higher academic scholarship you will have to forfeit the lower of the two.
