Prepare for academic success on the campus of Jacksonville State University!


ELI On-Campus Intensive English Program

Come to the friendly campus of Jacksonville State University, where the teachers of the English Language Institute will guide you through 140 hours of live instruction to prepare you for the language and academic requirements of university study. 

And after you receive your Certificate of Successful Completion, you can enter JSU with no TOEFL or IELTS score required. Just select "Conditional Admission" in your application.

The program's courses emphasize communicative proficiency—the ability to express yourself effectivelyso you can be confident that you will have the real-world skills to succeed:

Listening, Speaking & Critical Thinking

In this course, you will work on your verbal skills, especially your ability to communicate effectively at university. 

Reading, Writing & Critical Thinking

Learn to read, write, and research at the university level, including thinking critically about what you are reading and writing, participating in discussions, and collaborating with other students on team projects. 

Public Speaking & Presentation

Become confident organizing presentations and speaking to a live audience. This course will require some preparation outside of class.

Advanced Pronunciation

Advanced practice listening for and producing the sounds of professional English, including pronunciation, intonation ("melody"), stress patterns ("rhythm"), and other elements that fluent speakers use.

Simulated Course

Every session will feature a course that simulates an actual university course, such as American Cinema, Drawing, or U.S. History.

Conversation Partners

To practice the English that you're learning in the classroom, and to learn more about the University and American culture, you will be matched with a JSU student with whom you will meet regularly under the guidance of an ELI teacher.

Schedule

Each of the seven weeks provides 22 hours of live instruction, for a total of 154 hours. There is no better way to learn a language.

Activities

While you are studying on the university campus in Jacksonville, in addition to studying in the courses above, you will also learn how to use university services and facilities (such as the library and fitness center), observe JSU undergraduate classes, meet JSU professors and students, and enjoy cultural, sports, and other university events under the guidance of an ELI teacher.

And beyond the JSU campus your teachers will lead trips to nearby attractions such as NASA's Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, the Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, and the beautiful Mt. Cheaha State Park, Little River Canyon, and Cathedral Caverns.

Before you apply, please note that the Intensive English Program is not intended for Beginners. In your application, you will be asked to state your highest score on one of the following English tests:

Immediately after you submit your application you will receive a confirmation email with instructions to send scanned copies of passport and financial information so that the university's International Admissions office can prepare your student immigration documents.
