Basic Skills Testing is required for Teacher Education Program eligibility and admission. Note: Praxis fee waivers may be available from ETS for college students who meet all eligibility criteria. If you qualify for a fee waiver, the test fees for up to three Praxis Core tests may be waived. Students are eligible for a fee waiver only once during a testing year, and there are a limited number of waivers available per test date and per institution. All requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis by ETS.
Students who have completed English 101 and English 102 and a total of 48 hours are eligible. A wise student will not postpone taking the examination, since waiting until late in one’s college career to take the examination may delay graduation. Students must take and pass the exam NO LATER than the semester BEFORE they plan to apply for graduation.
One of these assessments must be completed to meet graduation requirements.
Beginning Spring 2017, the School of Education (SOE) fees cover the first test attempt for each of the required Praxis assessments for undergraduate teaching fields. Each department will contact teacher candidates about the ordering and issuing of Praxis voucher codes. Test vouchers will be issued to teacher candidates in respective departments. Once issued, test voucher codes are the responsibility of the teacher candidate. Teacher candidates will then register themselves with ETS using the issued voucher codes for the appropriate assessment. If the first attempt at each does not result in a passing score, the teacher candidate is responsible for the cost of any retakes. (If a student must retake due to a non-passing score, ETS Praxis fee waivers may be available for college students who meet all eligibility criteria. If you qualify for a fee waiver, the test fee for one Praxis Subject Assessment may be waived by ETS. Students are eligible for a fee waiver only once during a testing year, and there are a limited number of waivers available per test date and per institution. All requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis by ETS.)
Note: The Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis test is not a part of the fee structure configuration and will not be included in the issued Praxis codes.
The Praxis II exam is required for all teacher education candidates prior to internship and is also a certification requirement. This state-mandated requirement applies to all initial certifications, including Class B certification, Alternative A Masters, add-on certification, and any graduate degree program that is deemed initial certification. Teacher education candidates must list ALSDE and JSU as a recipient of the test score at the time of registration. Failure to do so may delay certification by the Alabama State Department of Education.
