Notes: "Hard" science fiction often takes the state of current scientific advancement and from it extrapolates future possibilities, if not probabilities. These extrapolations can be positive or negative, hopeful or despairing. Some of the "hard" sciences scrutinized in science fiction are mathematics, cybernetics, medicine, chemistry, physics, and astronomy. Hard science themes appear in short stories as well as novels.
