Detective Originals: Holmes and Dupin Pathfinder

(Houston Cole Library)

Notes: Edgar Allan Poe is generally credited with being the originator of the detective story, with his creation of the French investigator C. August Dupin. His five tales of this type set down the general principles of the detective story, which succeeding writers in the genre have followed ever since.  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle followed Poe's ground-breaking effort in the field withSherlock Holmes, surely the best-known fictional detective. Holmes's hold on the public has been such that writers after Doyle have added stories to the Holmes canon. Following is a selected list of works in which the adventures of these pioneering detectives may be read. For an introduction to various types of genre fiction, refer to the book GENREFLECTING (REF PS374.P63R67).
