Special habitat tanks present windows to the aquatic world, and ongoing experiments shed light on the natural processes that take place in water. Two different locations - an Earth-based mission control center and an orbiting space station - are the settings for extraterrestrial learning experiences. Take a seat in the Science Theater and you’ll be treated to entertaining science shows and demonstrations. Watch bolts of electricity fly across the room, or see clear liquids that combine to flow through a tube and bathe the theater in an eerie blue light. Visit after visit, you’ll always find something new in the Traveling Exhibit Hall, whether it’s a presentation on the science of sports, or an exhibit on virtual reality. This multipurpose gallery provides ample room for some of the most exciting traveling exhibits produced by science centers and museums around the world. • U.S. Space and Rocket Center
    • "When Dr. Wernher von Braun arrived in 1950 in the tiny Alabama town which called itself the "Watercress Capital of the World," Huntsville boasted a population of 15,000. Forty-eight years later, it is forged forever in history books as the place where America's space program began; where the rockets were developed that put the first U.S. satellite in orbit, sent men to the Moon and power today's Space Shuttle and where the living modules were built for the International Space Station. It is no suprise that Huntsville is also the home of the Earth's largest space attraction: The U.S. Space & Rocket Center. During the final months that von Braun and his team of scientists were refining the giant rocket that sent Apollo astronauts to the moon, he began launching a permanent exhibit to showcase the hardware of the space program. Today his dream has been realized, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center houses hundreds of artifacts, including the charred Apollo 16 command module, a rock brought back from the moon, and one of the shuttle's main engines that flew on Columbia's maiden voyage in 1981. It is also home for U.S. SPACE CAMP®, the world's pre-eminent youth science activities program. Hundreds of thousands of young people and adults from all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries have participated in SPACE CAMP and U.S. SPACE ACADEMY® astronaut training activities since the program began in 1982. The program is designed to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology and aerospace industries by giving them a firsthand introduction to the exciting work being done in the space program. Established in 1965 by the State of Alabama, empowered by the U.S. Congress and supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the nation's leading hands-on space science museum. Since 1982, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center has fostered national and international outreach programs through the U.S. SPACE CAMP, U.S. SPACE ACADEMY (1984), ADVANCED SPACE ACADEMY™ (1997), and AVIATION CHALLENGE® (1990) programs, and through the creation of the U.S. Space Camp Foundation (1987), a non-profit, educational organization."
  • World's Largest Chair
    • The world's largest chair is located in Anniston, Alabama. "Civic pride pulls no punches in the giant chair battle. Not two, but fully five towns are involved, and at least four others joined the fight before being knocked out of the ring. The South watched and waited. Then, in the early eighties, Miller Office Supply of Anniston, AL, built a thirty-three-foot-tall office chair in a vacant lot next to its store. The chair was made of ten tons of steel, causing would-be vandals to throw up their crowbars in despair. It could withstand 85 mph winds and a special spiral staircase led to its seat. Here, at last, was a chair for the ages. It quickly became Anniston's landmark. The Chamber of Commerce flew visiting businessmen over it. But the nineties were not kind to Anniston. Miller's moved crosstown and put the vacant lot up for sale. The chair's staircase was removed. Its paint began to peel. And amid all this, rumors swirled of a Swiss chair -- larger than any built before." (A picture of Anniston's chair is at the top of this page.)
