Behavior Change in Groups

Fall 2007

This course is designed to introduce students to the methods of social influence. We will read about classic studies in destructive social influence (e.g., Milgram's obedience studies and Zimbardo's prison study) as well as their real-world applications (e.g., men who participated in Hiltler's “final solution” in Poland and the military men and women who participated in the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib). We will also review research and theory on constructive social influence topics such as prosocial behavior and heroism. Finally, we will examine how social behaviors can be affected by the tipping point phenomenon and other group processes.
