WELCOME
Welcome to the David L. Walters
Department of Music at Jacksonville State University. The students, faculty and staff send you warm greetings and hope that you find the information on this web page interesting and informative.
JSU is located in the foothills of the Appalachians about 1.5 hours northeast of Birmingham and
about 2 hours west of Atlanta. The scenic campus has the charm, beauty and security of a small southern village
yet with a big-campus feel. JSU has nationally recognized and fully accredited programs in numerous areas including
outstanding degree programs in Music and Music Education. Even with its many advantages and comprehensive programs, JSU offers
exceptional value and is considered one of the best educational bargains in Alabama.
A diverse and inspiring faculty trained at some of the nation’s premier institutions are active as performers,
scholars, composers and teachers. Students have rare opportunities to work closely with and learn from these artist
teachers individually and in a wide variety of ensemble, seminar, and classroom settings. An energetic student body
is fully engaged in a wide variety of musical performance and learning activities and all gain significant experience by
playing key leadership roles within departmental activities.
Performing groups include the renown “Marching Southerners” who recently celebrated 50 years of excellence,
a Jazz program which boasts three jazz bands, Jacksonville Opera Theater, the well-known JSU A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers
and other choral organizations, a wide selection of concert instrumental groups including Chamber Winds and numerous chamber ensembles,
several percussion ensembles, the nationally ranked “Spirit from JSU” Drum and Bugle Corps, numerous piano opportunities . . . .
and the list goes on. At JSU music students benefit from the broad offerings experienced within a large comprehensive Music
program but with the personal, individual attention one would expect in the intimate setting of a small college.
As you explore these web pages, as you visit campus and as you see various JSU ensembles and students perform, consider
whether “JSU is right for you”. E-mail addresses are listed for faculty in all academic and performance areas. If you have
specific questions, contact the appropriate faculty. Or you may visit the “Contact Us” page. As members of the David L. Walters
Department of Music we are eager to share the excitement that comes from studying, learning and making music at JSU. Our activities
today prepare the musical leaders of tomorrow.
If you want to become part of this dynamic venture in music, we urge you to consider JSU as part of your educational plans
for the future. Join us. “JSU Music: A Proud Tradition in Sound Education.” |
