As a mathematics educator, I believe the
best approach to mathematics
education is “learning by doing.” In teaching mathematics, I begin with
a short
presentation of basic definitions and theory. Next, I present examples
of
solution techniques that may be used in problem solving. Finally, I
make a
problem assignment and allow at least 50% of the class time for
students to
complete the task.
Students with stronger mathematics
backgrounds often complete the assignment
in class and appreciate the blessing of no homework. Students who have
weaker
mathematics backgrounds have the advantage of immediate in-class help.
This
approach has proven effective. Most students achieve a level of
personal success
that allows them to meet their goals. Additionally, many students find
they are
able to overcome long-standing “math a phobias” such as - “I just can’t
do
math”.
