Fault Block Identification


Several new terminologies are used for faults. The FAULT PLANE is the plane along which the movement takes place. The FAULT TRACE is the intersection of the fault plane with the surface. The FAULT SCARP is the cliff that forms as a result of vertical faulting.

The hangingwall block is identified by the (red, green) arrow.
The fault plane is (brown, yellow, blue).
The fault scarp is (brown, yellow, blue).
The fault trace is (brown, yellow, blue).
This is a (normal, reverse, lateral) fault.
The upthrown block is on the (right, left).
