Soil Texture Activities

Determining Soil Textural Class using the "Finger Method".
In the field (or in the lab at a cheap outfit like J.S.U.), you may not have access to the sophisticated equipment needed to make exact determinations of soil texture. In this case, you will have to rely on your fingers to estimate the relative amounts of sand, silt and clay in the soil. This may sound crude, but with a little practice, you can become amazingly accurate. A flow chart can be used to determine the textures. Start at the top, determine a yes or no answer, and follow the appropriate arrow to the next question or conclusion.

Field Testing of Soil Texture

Be careful about getting mud in the sinks or making a mess. Sinks easily plug up and dirt has a way of getting all over the place.
