The JSU planetarium is hosting shows for K-12 students, youth organizations, and university students using their new Digistar 3SP projector. This facility has the most modern planetarium technology in the Southeast. Dr. Zettili's Grant: IMPACTSEED II has been accepted for funding from May 2004--June 2005 by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education as part of President's Bush No-Child Left Behind initiative. He also presented a paper on Jan. 27, 2004 at the 128th Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers entitled: "Skills of Student success in physics".

The Geographical Research Laboratory recently conducted a successful beta test of the new Alabama Environmental GIS as it would operate over the internet. A few more tasks need to be done, and with their successful completion, any internet user will have access to Alabama environmental data based on a GIS.

Dr. Bryan Burgess presented a GIS Workshop in Chicago on February 13 to the eastern states of the Sierra Club Water Sentinels. The workshop focussed on how to use a GIS in water montoring and basin analysis.

Dr. Hill attended the Southeast Region User's Group of ESRI in Savannah where she saw demonstrations of the new ArcGIS 9.0 that will be released this year. She presented a paper co-authored with Dr. Burgess on "Alabama Animal Feeding Operations: From SPOT to Shapefiles."

Dr. Jackson from the history department has published a history of Alabama. Dr. Hill provided map illustration for this book.

Dr. Hill has a Premier course called "Know Your Geography" that is offered through the Barnes and Noble University liberal arts campus at http://www.barnesandnobleuniversity.com/. This course covers physical and human geography with an brief survey of world regional geography. For a minimal fee, one can get a thorough overview of the field of geography and participate with students from around the world in a geographical exchange of experiences.

The Geographical Research Laboratory has been granted Registered Research Laboratory status by Intergraph. This follows the acceptance of the GIS program into the Intergraph Education Grant whereby students are able to learn to use GeoMedia Professional, Intergraph's GIS software.

The annual Archaeology Club Christmas party has been postponed until May 1 so that partygoers will not become "Iceman." Contact Dr. Holstein for additional details.

Gamma Theta Upsilon, The International Geographical Honor Society has accepted a new group of members and will host another initiation later this spring. The Geography Club has also had several organizational meetings.
