ALABAMA COMMISSION
ON ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES

A Focus on Environmental Education

In a late January, 2001 meeting of the Governor's ACEI, Chairman Pete Conroy announced plans to focus the Commission's efforts on the concept of a comprehensive environmental education plan for the state. The following is useful information for Commission Members and others who are interested in learning more about environmental education.

At the October 30th meeting of the Governor's ACEI, the following draft document (available below) was distributed. This October 30th draft is the result of an ongoing public participation process that has included the comments, edits, and suggestions of the Governor's ACEI as well as many others throughout the State. Notably, Dr. Paul Hubbert, Executive Secretary of the Alabama Education Association commented on the plan by saying "...it presents a comprehensive direction toward a sufficient and excellent resource plan to implement into Alabama's school curriculum and in the State" and he continued to say that "I believe that the plan outlined will assist in the education of our students to environmental issues as well as the public".

Currently, the ACEI Education Committee, the Governor's Office and the Alabama State Department of Education is working together to identify the best methods of implementation. To view this updated and revised plan, please click below.
