Scholarship Assistance Available
Department of English As a new or returning student, you may be eligible for financial assistance through English Department scholarships.

Writing Scholarships
If you have high interest in writing and can demonstrate genuine aptitude as a writer, you may wish to apply or one of the full-tuition, one-year scholarships for freshmen. To apply submit:

a letter of application
a recommendation from one of your writing teachers
a typed sample of fiction, poetry, and/or expository writing (but no research papers, please)
other evidence of your writing abilities such as awards in writing programs or contests

Calvert Scholarship

If you choose to become an English major, you may compete for a coveted full-tuition Calvert Scholarship. Named for a former head of the English Department, the Calvert Scholarship is given to a junior or senior English major based on overall academic performance, excellence in English Courses, and ability in scholarly writing pertinent to the field of English.

To apply, submit

a letter of application
an official transcript of all undergraduate course work
two letters of recommendation
a writing sample (minimum of 500 words on a topic pertinent to the English major)

Application deadline is April 30. Finalists will be interviewed by the Calvert Scholarship Committee.
