Adult Wellness Exercise
Adult Wellness Exercise (AWE) provides an opportunity for students to work with
senior adults in an exercise program designed to promote health and socialization.
The program involves the student and the senior adult in water exercise, chair and floor
exercise and walking.
Special Physical Education
Students interested in working with individuals with disabilities may pursue a
concentration in special physical education. Study involves classroom and practicum work
in physical education, recreation and sports with a wide variety of disabled children and
adults. Students earning 11-12 semester hours of special education course work qualify for
the Alabama Endorsement in adapted physical education.
HPER Major's Club
The Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Majors Club (HPER Club) has been at JSU since 1978.
The club offers students with a major in these fields the chance to obtain a wide variety of
information and opportunities for professional development. The club has won the Willis Baughman
Award for the Outstanding Majors Club in Alabama many times. Students have raised money for
"Hoops for Heart," participated in the Special Olympics and annually supply volunteers for the
Gamecock Gallop in November, which helps offset expenses to professional conferences. To join the
club, simply fill out a membership application (PDF,
Microsoft Word) and return it with the
$5.00 annual dues to Dr. Kory Hill in Room 305, Pete Mathews Coliseum. Members have
the opportunity to attend the Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation,
and Dance (ASAHPERD) Fall and Spring conferences, held in
Birmingham and Gulf Shores, respectively. This year's
Spring Conference will be held April 21 - 22, 2006 at Faulkner Community College in Gulf Shores.
Student membership in ASAHPERD is only $15.00 and the forms are available in both Microsoft Word
and PDF format here.
