Exercise Science & Wellness

   

The B.S. degree in Exercise Science & Wellness is intended primarily for those seeking a career in preventative and/or rehabilitative medicine. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has provided a 4-page brochure on Careers in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science.

In the area of preventative medicine, graduates are receiving employment in

  • Corporate Wellness Programs,
  • Hospital and Medical Center Wellness Programs,
  • University Based Wellness Programs,
  • Wellness Counseling Groups, Health/Fitness Organizations,
  • YMCA/YWCA,
  • Community Centers,
  • Commercial Fitness/Wellness Centers,
  • and wellness focused organizations.

Primary responsibilities may include

  • health/fitness screening,
  • writing exercise prescriptions,
  • teaching all facets of aerobics and weight training,
  • nutrition/weight loss programming,
  • stress management,
  • smoking cessation,
  • and other wellness programs.

In the area of rehabilitative medicine, graduates are receiving employment in the areas of Cardiac Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and Sports Medicine (i.e. Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Orthopedic Rehabilitation) The primary responsibility in rehabilitative medicine is to engage in lifestyle modifications and physical improvements to enhance the lives of those who have experienced an anatomical or physiological setback.

Included in the 128 semester hour degree program is a minor area of study requirement. Minors may be selected from a variety of offerings including, but not limited to: gerontology, psychology, nutrition, business, computer science, and technology. A 6 hour (200 clock hours) practicum is also required of all ESW majors. Students are encouraged to select a setting (preventative or rehabilitative) for the practicum that is representative of the direction they want their career to move. A number of students in the ESW program have received full-time employment at their practicum site following graduation.
