Driver and Traffic Safety Education

To assist local education agencies in seeking driver and traffic safety education teachers, guidelines have been established for issuing a Preliminary Certification for individuals who are employed or will be employed in that area. The applicant must hold a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in any field and complete the required State Department of Education's (SDE) basic and advanced driver education courses prior to the employing superintendent's request for a Preliminary Certificate.

The SDE will sponsor a basic and advanced driver education course using a combination of distance learning and regular classroom settings during the last two weeks in July of each year. Individuals will pay college course tuition and will receive six semester hours of college credit.  Space is limited.

To register, contact Dr. Mac Gillam, JSU Department of HPER (256) 782-5523. Course credit must appear on a university transcript which must be submitted with Supplement Form ADM by the employing superintendent.

To assist individuals seeking a Preliminary Certification in Driver and Traffic Safety Education the following courses are required:

TE 490 M/G Basic Driver and Traffic Education (3)

TE 491 M/G Advanced Driver and Traffic Education (3)

* M = Experimental Undergraduate Course
* G = Experimental Graduate Course
