Jacksonville State University's Department of HPER offers a Concentration in Special Physical Education at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels. This program is intended to prepare teachers to teach physical education and sport to students with disabilities. The endorsement is attained by completing 12 semester hours of coursework in special physical education as a part of a teaching certificate in physical education or special education. Upon coursework completion, the student should request written documentation from the Jacksonville State University Department of HPER. Total—12 hours Students are required to take 12 semester hours from the courses listed at either the graduate or undergraduate levels. Admission to teacher education is required. Students are required to earn a “C” or higher in these courses to earn the Endorsement. Undergraduate Courses & Check Sheet HPE 318- Health for Special Populations (3) This course examines the nature and needs of special populations and explores current research regarding special populations to better understand the area. HPE 381– Adapted Physical Education (2). An introductory course in the field of adapted Physical Education. HPE 385– Practicum in Special PE and Rec (3). Directed practical experiences in physical education and recreation with exceptional individuals. HPE 403- Special Olympics and Athletics for Special Populations (3). Historical and current trends overview of sports for the handicapped. Active involvement in the Special Olympics will be required. HPE 460- Motor Development (2) . Theoretical and practical principles of motor development. HPE 580 - Adapted Physical Education. Comprehensive study to develop the ability to deal successfully with disabled children, youth, and adults in a variety of settings. HPE 581 - Advanced Practicum in Special Physical Education. Directed practical experiences in physical education and recreation with individuals with disabilities. HPE 582 - Research Seminar in Special Physical Education. Critical analysis and evaluation of current research and practical application in the field of special physical education. HPE 583 - Perceptual Motor Development. Development of perceptual and motor skills through physical activities. GRADUATE STUDENTS: Once you have completed 12 hours of study at either the graduate or undergraduate level, bring your check sheet to the HPER office. You may request a letter stating you have completed the requirements for the endorsement in Special Physical Education from Jacksonville State University.
