Community Health Minor

 

 

The Department of HPER at Jacksonville State University offers a minor in Community Health. The 18-hour minor is intended to prepare students interested in a career in a non-education health field.

The courses required for the Community Health minor are available online via Blackboard and in the traditional classroom setting.

HPE 212  Personal & Community Health (3)

The development of habits, attitudes, and knowledge concerning health, and the professional preparation of individuals for work in the community health field.

HPE 312  Health Problems and Disease Prevention (3)

The course provides an overview of health problems and disease prevention in today's society. An analysis of a variety of personal, social, community, and environmental factors is explored.

HPE 315  Foundations of Health Science (3)

This course explores a historical and philosophical study of the growth and development of health science, health education, and health promotion.

HPE 318  Health for Special Populations (3)

This course examines the nature and needs of special populations and explores current research regarding special populations to better understand the area.

HPE 360  School and Community Health Programs (3)

This course examines methods in comprehensive school health education for grades 6-12 and also explores community health program planning.

HPE 420  Health Aspects of Aging (3)

The physical, social, emotional, and mental aspects of aging of healthy aging will be explored.

Community/Public Health Education

Employed by voluntary health agencies (i.e. American Cancer Society) and public health    agencies (i.e. U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention)

Worksite Health Education

Employed by business and industry to provide programs to improve the health of employees.

Health Education in Health Care Settings

Employed by public and for-profit hospitals.

Free-standing medical care clinics that provide both routine care and emergency services.

Home health agencies that provide in-home care designed to replace or reduce the need for more expensive hospitalization, and physician

organizations such as health maintenance organizations (HMOs).

Preferred provider organizations (PPOs) to provide programs for employees, patients, or the community at  large.

Health Education in Colleges or Universities

Employed as faculty member in the academic field (advanced degree needed) or as a health service or wellness center coordinator.

International Opportunities

Employed by international health organizations (i.e. Peace Corps) to diversify your training and to gain valuable working experience both professionally and personally.

Nontraditional Health Education Positions

Sales positions related to health (i.e. pharmacy sales, fitness equipment sales, health-related textbooks, life and health insurance sales) or      employment in the fields of media (journalism, TV, or radio).
