Department of Communication - Student Media

Students are encouraged to get pre-professional experience in the department by becoming writers or photographers for The Chanticleer student newspaper and the Mimosa yearbook. Students may also work on-the-air shifts at the campus radio station, WLJS-FM.

JSU's award-winning student newspaper, The Chanticleer, offers students the opportunity to get hands-on experience. Students serve as Editor in Chief, section editors, photographers, and advertising staffers. Not only do staff members get reporting and editing experience, but the paper's desktop publishing system is a great way to prepare for a field that is computer-dependent. Advisor: Mike Stedham. The Mimosa serves as a memory book, a history book and a reference book for JSU students, faculty and staff. Students serve as editor-in-chief, section editors, staff writers and photographers. Paid student positions are available. Advisor: Mike Stedham. Contact him at mstedham@jsu.edu or 256-782-5713.

The campus radio station, WLJS-92J, is a 3000-watt FM station licensed to the Board of Trustees of JSU. It provides the University and surrounding communities with NPR programming, news, music, public affairs, sports programming and information about campus activities. The station provides hands-on experience for students who are interested in a career in broadcasting. The following paid student positions are available: program director; patron promotions director; music director; assistant program director; and two announcer positions. Advisor: Mike Stedham. Contact him at mstedham@jsu.edu or 256-782-5713.
