The Department of Communication offers scholarships
to qualified students.
WJSU-TV Scholarship
The WJSU-TV scholarship is awarded once a year to an outstanding entering
freshman. To qualify, applicant must: be a high school senior; meet all
requirements for a freshman entering JSU; have a minimum ACT composite
score of 25; and have a minimum high school GPA of 3.25. The scholarship
is valued at $500.00 per semester for a total of 8 semesters or $4,000.00
maximum. Application deadline is March 15.
Scholarship for Continuing Communication Students
Scholarships for continuing communication majors (approximately $200)
are awarded during the fall and spring semesters. Applicant must have completed
12 hours of communication courses at JSU, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Applicant is judged on commitment to the major and to the communication
field. Participation in the Society of Professional Journalists, WLJS-FM
radio, The Chanticleer student newspaper, The Mimosa yearbook, attendance
at Department of Communication functions, and/or professional media employment
is considered. Application deadlines are September 30 and January 31.

Department Awards
Each spring, one graduating senior will receive the distinguished John
C. Turner Outstanding Graduate Award, named for a 17-year veteran of the
department. The Outstanding SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists) Graduate
Award is given each spring as well.
The Department of Communication hosts its annual banquet each April
where students are also recognized for individual achievement in student
media and coursework.
