I live in Centre, AL, with my husband Mark and our nine children (five cats: Goliath, Mulder, Chew Toy, Momma Kitty, Egwaine, Avenda, and Perin; one dog: Frodo; and horse: Murphy).   My favorite activity is riding and showing Murphy in hunter/jumper and dressage competitions.  I also enjoy reading, sewing, painting, playing computer games (when I can get my husband off the computer), and designing web pages.

I graduated from Fort Payne High School in 1987.  I received my bachelors degree from Judson College majoring in Art and a double minor in French and equine science in 1990.  After I graduated my sister and I began taking community sign language courses from Kay Wright, our local interpreter.  Her deaf daughter, Pam (Wright) Meinhardt, took over teaching after the second class.  Pam and I became friends and that is when I really learned ASL.  In 1991 I came to JSU searching for a part-time job as an interpreter.  I could not find a job in my field and I thought interpreting would be a fun thing to do until I could find a “real” job as a graphic designer.  That was many years ago.  I never realized just how addicting interpreting would become.

When I first started interpreting I was a “lousy signer” (as deaf friends kindly tell me in retrospect) but with the patience and help of the deaf students my skills have increased exponentially, or at least I am now a passable signer :-)  I have an Advanced Plus rating on the SCPI, a Level IV on the NAD, and am a candidate for RID certification.   I, also have taught sign languages classes at JSU through the continuing education department.  To date three of my students have also become interpreters.

In December of 1997, I received my Masters in English from Jacksonville State University.   In February of 1998, I was hired as the Disability Specialist: Deafness here at JSU.  I love my job which includes: making presentations, conducting workshops, providing outreach and technical assistance, interpreting, student advising, tutoring, and much, much more.  I also moonlight as an English instructor.
