General Information

The mission of the Drama Department at Jacksonville State University is to offer our students complete range of the theatre experience. We provide a solid foundation in theatre history, literature, theory, and performance, while developing individual talents through the exploration of various areas of specialization and the experience of practicing classroom knowledge by creating theatre.  Part of our commitment to provide a superior program for our students has lead to the department's accrediting by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Undergraduate majors in Drama at Jacksonville State enjoy a combination of a superb teacher based educational experience and a vital, engaging production program. The people and resources of the university are committed to providing every student with the benefits of a superior liberal arts education.

We believe it is so important for students to be involved in theatre that we provide every opportunity possible. Undergraduate students successfully compete in auditions for roles in Mainstage and Second Stage  productions. They do studio and course  work in every production area. Students will work as directors, actors, designers, stage managers, technicians, and playwrights. Majors are expected to participate in some way on all department productions. Drama majors are also expected to do outside theatre work including summer stock or Outdoor Drama productions at least one summer during their time at JSU.  Technical majors also have done additional work to gain professional experience in their fields.

The B.A. program provides its students with intellectual stimulation and healthy creative challenges. At JSU, undergraduate Drama majors study--and they act, they construct, they design, they direct, they write--and they learn theatre!

The Drama Department has outstanding facilities that include a 372 seat proscenium theatre with a fully equipped stage and up to date lighting and sound systems.  The department also has modern, fully equipped scenery and costume shops that allow the students hands on experience with the latest technology.
