  • TEST INFORMATION HAS BEEN UPDATED - CLICK THE TEST INFO LINK.

Tuesday September 23, 2008

  • Read the article "Could Social Media be the Google Killer?". This is a somewhat speculative article, but it covers some topics we will be discussing this week.
  • On the MDE site, on the Navigation Page, find the article "Search Engine Users" by Deborah Fallows. Read the 'Summary of Findings' pages i to iv.

Wednesday September 17, 2008

  • Read the article "The Man Who Owns the Internet". This article discusses Domain Name acquisition as a business strategy.

Friday September 12, 2008

  • Read the article "The Laws of the Web". Note: Zipf's Law is very similar to the Power Law distribution of business Web sites.
  • Read the article "The Long Tail". Its about five pages long, and make sure you check out the graphs associated with it. The article was the basis for a book which has become a business 'best seller' and it discusses business aspects of the 'Long Tail' of the power law distribution of the Web .
  • NOTA BENE: IF YOU HAVE FALLEN BEHIND IN THE READINGS, I SUGGEST YOU TAKE THIS WEEKEND TO REMEDY THAT SITUATION.

Thursday September 11, 2008

  • Read the article "Network Theory's New Math". This article is important because it provides an overview and summary of several books which give perspectives on business in the next decade

Tuesday September 9, 2008

  • Read the article "Domain Name Primer" This is one of three or four key articles you should become especially familiar with. The next few lectures will also touch on material from this article.

Wednesday September 3, 2008

Tuesday September 2, 2008

Friday August 29, 2008

  • In preparation for next week's Personal Web Page assignment, Read the article "Creating Your Own Wiki Website "from the Wall Street Journal to see what the business press has to say about Wiki's.
  • Read the case "We Googled You" for discussion in class Tuesday  You will find an electronic version of the case at the JSU Library Site.
    • Go to the JSU home page - Click on 'Library' on the left nav panel
    • Click on Find articles and data bases.
    •  Use the Business Source Premier data base.
    • Then on the right navigation panel, click on Magazines.
    • From there click on the 'H" tab and Harvard Business Review is the first magazine listed.
    • The article is in the June 2007 issue of the Harvard Business Review.  Remember, HBR is listed as a 'magazine' and not as a 'journal'.  I don't recommend that you simply Google the title, because usually you don't get a link to the full article.  Make sure you read what the 'experts' have to say.  Their opinions are presented following the case in HBR.  If you have a problem locating the case, you might ask the library staff to help you on Friday or Monday.
