Distinguished Faculty Achievement Awards:

Since I came to Jacksonville State University, I have been awarded number of distinguish honors including:

The Association of Southern Biology Meritorious Teaching Award (2007). This award is given once a year to one selected faculty from one the universities out of the Southeastern United States (http://www.jsu.edu/news/jan_june2007/04242007e.html).

Distinguished Achievement Award (2007). Presented By the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Republic of Iraq, Washington, DC. This award is given to select expatriate Iraqi those excelled and Distinguished in their profession.

Baghdad University Service Award (2006). . This award is given to one selected individuals for their significant contribution to Baghdad University.

Jacksonville State University, College of Arts and Sciences' Service Award (2006). Awarded once a year recognizing the most accomplished faculty for the outstanding performance in the area of service.

Jacksonville State University the Education, and Service Award (2005). Awarded once a year recognizing the most accomplished faculty for the outstanding performance in the area of Education and service.

Jacksonville State University, College of Arts and Sciences' Community Dean's Award for Institutional Service (2005). Awarded once a year recognizing the most accomplished faculty for the outstanding performance in the area of service.

Jacksonville State University the Faculty Scholar Research Award (2004). Awarded once a year recognizing the most accomplished faculty for the outstanding performance in the area of scholarship.

Fulbright Scholarship (Yarmouk University, Jordan) for the academic year 2001-2002.

Faculty Appreciation Award, International Student Organization (2000). Awarded occasionally to those individual make a significant contribution to the international students program.

Professional Experience:

I came to Jacksonville State University in 1992 from Miami University of Ohio, Department of Botany where I was a Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate from 1990 to 1992. Prior to that, I was a Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate at Oklahoma State University, Department of Botany from 1988 to 1990. My main responsibilities here in JSU have been included teaching introductory and upper-division plant biology and environmental science courses. In addition, carryout a vigorous research program involving undergraduate and Master's degree students. My primary research interest is to investigate the influence of selected environmental stresses on plants. My recent interest has been focusing on studying Phytoremediation. In 2001, I was awarded Fulbright Scholar for the 2001-2002 academic years to teach plant biology courses and conduct research at Yarmouk University, Jordan. Since May 2005, I have been selected to service as the Editor of Alabama Academy of Science Journal. The Alabama Academy of Science is preview journal publishes significant novel research of interest to a wide audience of scientists in all areas of Science (http://www.jsu.edu/news/jan_june2005/safaa-ed.html).

In the Area of Public Service:

I founded the Books for Baghdad project (http://www.booksforbaghdad.org/), which received nation wide recognition and was reported by over 100 news agencies including CNN (http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0407/13/lol.02.html).

The projected was resulted in the collection over 54,000 current college textbooks and educational supplies. The first shipment was sent on May 2005 to my alma mater, Baghdad University (http://www.jsu.edu/news/jan_june2005/booksupdate.html). As a result of the success and positive response, a second book drive was initiated. I was successful in shipping two containers on July 2006, each twenty feet long with approximately 10,000 books each. The books are in a variety of subjects which include math, science, technology and medicine (http://www.jsu.edu/news/jan_june2006/06292006a.html). The third shipment reach Baghdad on January 2007. The project is sill going strong with hope to expand to cover other universities in Iraq.

 

As a result of Katrina tragedy in New Orleans, many victims had to migrate into north Alabama. I had the opportunity to organize medical assistance, free of charge, to all the victims in our area. I recruited about thirty Muslim physicians to donate there services to the victims.

The earthquake of 2005 in Pakistan was resulted in a humanitarian tragedy by forcing thousands of people to be homeless as a result of the collapsing of their dwelling. I had the opportunity to work through the Islamic community to raise $23,000. The money was invested in buying tent and blanket to improve the lives of the victims.
