Office of the Associate Vice President for
Academic Affairs
Memorandum
From: Joe G. Delap
Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
Date: January 2, 2008
Subject: University Travel and Self-improvement Grants
Second Call for Request for Funding Proposals
The University Travel and Self-improvement Grants program is intended to provide opportunities for faculty self-improvement or renewal. Guidelines emphasize funding for a limited number of presentations at regional or national meetings. In order to provide full financial support to faculty presenters, no funding is available for travel to attend or participate at professional meetings.
Faculty
who plan to attend only but not present at national or regional meetings are
asked to request funding through departmental, college, and other sources.
Applications
are due no later than February 4, 2008 and should be submitted to the
Professional Development Committee, c/o AVPAA, 201 Bibb
Please note: you are required to include seven copies of
the application and documentation, along with the original application that
must be approved by the department head and dean.
Questions regarding these guidelines or this process should be addressed to Dr. Delap at 782-5284.

Grant Form

The University Travel and Self-improvement Grants program is
intended to provide opportunities for faculty self-improvement or renewal.
The program guidelines are intentionally broad so that faculty throughout
the University can propose innovative and diverse projects in a variety of
areas. Presentations of scholarly papers or creative activities at
national or regional professional meetings will be supported with these funds.
Travel grants are not made for normal course development or activities that are
part of one's regular responsibilities, nor can travel grant proposals be
submitted for conferences at which the faculty member is not making a
presentation. Also eligible are faculty
who hold official positions or offices in professional organizations and who
are not compensated for expenses associated with attendance at organizational
meetings.
II. ELIGIBILITY
Faculty that are full-time, regular faculty members holding
the rank of instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor
and administrators with faculty rank are eligible to apply for university
travel grants. Priority will be given to those faculty members in tenure
track or promotion eligible tracks. Full-time temporary and adjunct
faculty are not eligible to apply.
III. APPLICATION
The application packet must include the following:
Application for University Travel
and Self-improvement Grants and
Documentation of acceptance of your scholarly paper or creative
activity, indicating the event/organization, date/s (fiscal year 2007-2008),
and place. A letter, email or
copy of program would be acceptable as documentation.
Submission of the application is made through the department
head and dean to the Professional Development Committee, 201 Bibb
When a proposal is approved for funding and the faculty
member accepts the award and its conditions, money will be transferred to the
home department for use by the faculty member.
IV. LIMITATIONS
All proposals should clearly describe how the university
will benefit from the faculty's proposed activity. The strength of the application depends on
the expected contributions to the university and future professional life of
the faculty member. A limited number of travel grants will be awarded based on
competitive criteria and available funds.
Applications for University Travel and Self-improvement Grants must receive the recommendation of the department head and dean or designee, then be forwarded to the Professional Development Committee for review according to a timetable developed by the committee. The committee will make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for the award of university travel grants in accordance with the budget approval process and available funds.
V. REVOCATION OF GRANTS
In the event the terms of the approved proposal are not
implemented, grants may be revoked in full or in part by a majority vote of the
Professional Development Committee with final approval by the Associate Vice
President for Academic and Student Affairs.
Prior consultation/correspondence with the awarded faculty member is
required. Any awarded faculty member
leaving JSU before the grant is used shall notify the Chair of the Professional
Development Committee. Revocation of the grant is automatic under such
circumstances.
VI. RELEASE OF UNUSED FUNDS
If a university travel grant is not used, the Chair of the
Professional Development Committee should be notified. This should be
accomplished in a timely manner so that unused funds may be distributed to
other applicants.
VI. APPEAL
An appeal of a university travel grant decision must be
directed to the Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. A formal, written appeal must be filed within
fourteen (14) calendar days of notification of the committee's recommendations
