Committee for the Recruitment and Retention of
African American Faculty and Staff
Purpose
The purpose of the Committee is to advise the administration of JSU on
the best methods for increasing and retaining African American
representation among the faculty and administrative staff, and to
enhance the University’s success in this key effort. Current
initiatives include:
Recruitment
Advertise administrative and faculty position
in Diverse Issues in Higher
Education which markets
to all minority groups, but predominantly the African-American higher
education
community.
Disseminate more broadly the brochure JSU . . . Reaching out to
African Americans
Ensure that on-campus visits of African American job candidates
include meetings with faculty, staff, students and community members
who can most clearly address their questions (i.e., AFORE
representative, Recruitment and Retention Committee member)
Participate in conferences that focus on issues of diversity in
hiring, and develop a knowledge base for improvement of recruitment
efforts
Continue to recruit JSU graduate degree recipients in
areas/disciplines where people of color are underrepresented
Retention
Maintain a Faculty Mentoring program to help acculturate new
African American faculty and administrators
Provide financial support (including tuition, books, stipend and
educational leave time)
to sustain a “Grow Your Own” program for African American faculty,
graduate students, administrators, and staff wishing to pursue the
terminal degree in their major field of study or in educational
administration
Support excellence in scholarship and foster further professional
development among African American faculty through University-based
research grants, including provisions for graduate assistantships,
equipment and travel
