Houston Cole Library has recently renovated a section of the 4th floor, dedicating it to a new group-study room.
This new facility is reservation only. It is great for students in classes together and Greek affiliated groups to come in and be able to get work done together without interrupting other students who take advantage of a quiet library and its resources.
The room is equipped with a big screen TV, white board, a computer, and comfy chairs.
The isolation of the room gives students the ability to discuss work without harming other students’ ability to concentrate. There has been a high demand for a group study area for multiple students to have the freedom to converse and work together without bothering others.
According to Debra Deering, User Services,“Several students needed a place to study [together], or to hold study groups. We really had no place for them to be and have a quiet place to study is why we renovated it, and wejust did the one room just to see how it goes over.”
There must be a minimum of 2 students to book the new group-study room, with a maximum of about 8 students.
Booking the group-study room is very simple, one can either go online and fill out the reservation request form, come to the library in person, or call the circulation desk.
The library group-study room is in full swing, many students have already booked the room, averaging about 2 bookings per day.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea, I don’t know what took them so long. I have intentions of using it in the next two weeks.” said Amanda Snyder, a graduate student who isn’t the only one happy of the room. Student opinion seems to be unanimous and as midterms creep closer Synder won’t be the only one needing a quiet space to study.
As of right now, there is only one group-study room but if enough students utilize the area, they foresee the addition of other group-study rooms.
Until further notice students are allowed to reserve the room as many times as needed per week, but if the amount of reservations increases, students will only be able to use the room once per week.
