On August 16th, the JSU Student Government Association hosted a Battle of the Bands in the TMB auditorium and, after a bevy of great performances from local acts, Gadsden's own Eleanor Lane took home first prize.
After a week's postponement and during drenching weather, local bands and fans of local music piled into the TMB auditorium. The mood was jovial among the music fans, but as one wet musician after another filed in, it was easy to tell that some were there for one reason only: the first place prize of $250 and the opportunity of performing before the start of the JSU vs. Southeast Missouri State football game on Sept. 29th.
"We thought this would be a great way to get people excited about the upcoming school year, as well as give a few local bands some recognition," said Alex Rainwater, Vice President of Student Activities at JSU.
"We have many more fun things planned for this upcoming semester and beyond. The Battle of the Bands is just the beginning. We just wanted to do something fun, to start the year off right."
Following hours of awesome performances by dedicated local groups spanning almost all genres of music, the student judges announced that pop-punk act Eleanor Lane would be walking away with the prize.
"Yeah, the $250 prize is exciting, but we're really looking forward to playing for everybody," said lead singer Robbie Faulkner. "We love JSU and can't wait to party hard on September 29th."
