New parking for students is coming to Forney Ave. According to Director of Institutional Support Services Joe Whitmore, approximately 200 new spaces will be added on two adjacent lots by Nov.
“Parking for Leone Cole Auditorium has been a problem on this campus for years,” said Whitmore. “Any time there’s events at Leone Cole, there’s really not a good place for the people that are coming to be able to park. Whether it’s a student event or a public event, there’s just no parking there to accommodate it.
”This was an opportunity to provide parking for the auditorium and students.
Project planning began last fall, with studies, engineers and EPA requirements. According to Whitmore, there’s a lot of red tape to go through to start a project of this nature. But construction began mid-June, and finish deadline is November.
“Hopefully it will be a little sooner than that,” he said, “but that depends on the weather.
”The space will contain two separate lots due to “the lay of the land.”
“Being able to build a road coming in and out without having elevation changes, you know, cars might drag and that kind of thing,” is a factor, said Whitmore.
Both will open at the same time.
