JSU Homecoming festivities showcase Gospel choir

There is never a shortage of things to do during Homecoming weekend at JSU.

There is something for everyone, especially those with an interest in music or musical groups at the university.

On Saturday October 27th, JSU ENCORE! and the JSU Gospel Choir held a concert in Mason Hall. Celebrate Homecoming was only one of the many events that the Music Department had scheduled for the week.

The event aimed to showcase the groups and their talents to those in attendance, especially to alumni who do not get to return to Jacksonville during other times of the year to hear such groups perform.

JSU ENCORE!, JSU’s show choir, was the first to perform. The ensemble is directed by Dr. Renee Baptiste. They performed songs ranging from musical classics to the modern hits of today. Their vocal performance was also of good quality from the beginning and set the standard for the rest of the performance, and was much enjoyed by those in attendance.

The JSU Gospel Choir performed with a great energy and full of emotion. This ensemble is directed by Dr. Myrtice Collins, who even performed with the group during a song near the end of the performance. The group sang songs ranging from spirituals to old hymns. Some members of the audience were even moved to tears by the group’s performance of the hymn His Eye is on the Sparrow. The group was well rehearsed and that shone through this performance.

The ensembles performed along a group of musicians who were also very skilled in their areas. They kept up with the high energy performance of ENCORE! and the ever-changing Gospel Choir.

The audience was very impressed by the talent of those in the ensembles, which made the alumni proud to have been a part of such a great university.

JSU ENCORE! will have its Fall Concert on Thursday, November 15th at 7:30 p.m. in Mason Hall. The JSU Gospel Choir will also have its Fall Concert shortly after on Sunday, November 18th in Mason Hall. Both of these are free events, be sure to go and support JSU’s show choir and Gospel choir.
