Soccer has tough weekend in OVC

Jacksonville State fell to Eastern Kentucky 1-0 in their OVC opener.

Eastern Kentucky came into the game already on a six game winning streak against the Gamecocks. Although, for this season they entered the game winless and left with their first win of the season.

The game was scoreless for 45 minutes and it was only early on in the second half that EKU scored on the foot of Kristan Paynter. It would be the only score of the game and the score that would allow EKU to walk away with the victory.

It was all Eastern Kentucky in the first half of the game. They held JSU to two shots in the half and a season-low six total on the night.

Junior Jackie Rush had three of the six shots taken by the Gamecocks, but was unable to find the net.

On Sunday, JSU closed out ots homestead with an unfortunate 2-1 double-overtime loss to Morehead State. Rush scored the only goal for JSU, who only got off ten shots during the match compared to Morehead’s 23. The game winner for the Eagles came in the 101st minute.

The Gamecocks fell to 4-6-1 on the season.

The month of October will open with road contests at defending OVC champ UT Martin, then Southeast Missouri State and Belmont. JSU will return home on Oct. 13 to play Tennessee Tech.
