To become Employee of the Month on the campus of JSU there are a few things that need to happen. First, a nomination letter must be written for you, then your supervisor must agree and nominate you as well, and finally the nominee is reviewed. Passing through all these barriers this month would be Lora Spivey, Secretary for the Department of Emergency Management. She is October’s Employee of the Month.
Her department head, Dr. Ryan, was the one who gave her the great news. “He handed me the letter. I was very surprised. My first thought was I hope I don’t have to take any pictures”. All joking aside, Mrs. Spivey went on to say that she was very honored to be recognized as the Employee of the Month.”I work with a great group of people and to have them recognize me in this way means so much,” she said.
Spivey has worked for JSU since September 2000, and this isn’t her first time receiving this award. She was also recognized back in July 2001.
She and her husband celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this past June. She also has 3 children. Allyson, 21, is a Pastry Chef. She recently graded from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Madison ,13, is in the 8th grade at Piedmont City Middle School and plays trumpet and melophone for the Piedmont Blue Knights Marching Band. Carson,10, is in the fifth grade at Piedmont Elementary School. He enjoys playing video games, golf, and basketball.
When asked what her what her favorite month is she said, “December. I love Christmas! All of the Christmas activities at church help to get my family into the true spirit of the season. I love the excitement of the children, the music, the decorations and spending extra time with family and friends. I enjoy decorating my house with tress in almost every room and preparing to host our family’s Christmas celebration”.
In 2011 the Department of Emergency Management began JSU’s first doctoral program. They also offer a Master of Science Degree in Emergency Management and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Emeregency Management. All programs required for their degrees can be completed completely online.
