Could you imagine what it would be like to sleep under the stars? No tent, no sleeping bag, nothing but the clothes on your back to keep you warm. Could you imagine having to spend the night in the winter storm that happened this week? This is something that people go through on a daily basis.
Because of this, Phi Beta Sigma and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) have created an event where they hope the outcome is a better appreciation for the roofs that cover our heads.
“Sleep Out for the Homeless” is an event created to raise awareness of what the homeless community faces in their lives. It is hosted by the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and RHA.
RHA and Phi Beta Sigma are teaming up for this event because of Phi Beta Sigma member Donovan Wilson, who is also a member of RHA. He presented the idea to RHA because he “felt that it would have a greater impact from a housing perspective since part of RHA’s mission is to create a greater appreciation for housing.”
There will be a guest speaker, Dr. Nancy Stewart, to help inform the student population of what goes on in the homeless community.
There will a competition and prizes and of course, free food and drinks. This will be happening on the quad.
This event was originally scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Due to the weather troubles of that day the event has been rescheduled.
Housing has not set a new date yet.
