Alumni House
Jacksonville State University

The year is 1839. In Jacksonville, friendly Indians camp on the future campus of Jacksonville State University. On a farm nearby, builders erect an elegant little house on the corner of the present-day Pelham Road and Roebuck Waters Drive.

Historians called the place the "Foster - Bellamy - Mattison - Rowan - Fitts - Roebuck House," least anyone forget its fine pedigree, but local folks referred to it as simply "The Roebuck House." It became the home of Judge John Foster, a prominent citizen who eulogized slain Confederate hero Major John Pelham in 1863. Later, the rear of the home served as a school operated by owners Dr. and Mrs. William Bellamy. In the early 1900s, Dr. John Forney Rowan resided there while serving as the State Teachers College physician for some 30 years.

The University bought and restored the home in 1981. Opened to the public on Homecoming Day, 1982, as the Alumni House, the facility became the focal point for many social and cultural events for the entire JSU community.

The House is open every school day from 8 a.m. to Noon and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. To inquire about booking a wedding or other social event, call 256-782-5404.

The facility houses the following departments:

  • Alumni Affairs.
